Il casato ha origini antichissime ed è di stirpe longobarda. Il suo capostipite, Oberto q. Adalberto, ebbe dal Re d'Italia Berengario II la dignità di Conte Palatino nel 945 e quella di Marchese nel 950, con l'annesso ufficio di rappresentante imperiale; egli fu a capo della Marca della Liguria orientale, che si ritiene avesse per confini il mar Tirreno a sud, il fiume Orba a ovest, il fiume Po a nord e il Parmense e la Toscana a est. Dal nome del suo capostipite la famiglia fu detta "Obertenga" e dal suo ceppo comune sono derivate altrettanti illustri prosapie: infatti i quattro figli di Oberto (Adalberto, Oberto Obizzo I, Alberto I e Oberto II) furono a loro volta, rispettivamente, i capostipiti dei Pallavicino (linee di Genova e di Parma), dei Malaspina (linee del "ramo secco" e del "ramo fiorito"), dei Marchesi di Gavi e di Parodi e degli Estensi
