Antica e nobile famiglia di Alessandria, fregiata del titolo comitale. Pur non escludendo che i C. trasferitisi a Viguzzolo siano una diramazione degli ominimi di Milano, come afferma il Carnevale in "Uomini Illustri" non se ne conosce l'origine; il primo di cui è segnalata la presenza nel 1515 è un Francesco dal quale inizia la genealogia qui stralciata dal Gasparolo. E' indubbio che vi giunsero godendo di una certa agiatezza, quantomeno, di un discreto benessere, se per oltre tre secoli il casato fu illustrato da notai, causidici, teologi, podestà, sindaci con pieno diritto d'inserirsi nel ceto nobiliare dopo tre consecutive generazioni di notai, non tutti indicati nel frammento geneaologico. Dalla "Matricola dei notai che rogarono nel Tortonese dal sec. XIV al XVIII" rilevasi appunto che Ottavio di Antonio Francesco, anch'esso notaio, esercitava in Tortona nel 1674 e Giovanni Angelo suo figlio nonché Giovanni Antonio figlio del notaio Giacomo Andrea
