Mediante diploma del 22 sett. 1503, Guido Ubaldo I duca d'Urbino, creando cavaliere aurato Martino di Lorenzo da Sansepolcro (Arezzo), concedette a lui e ai suoi successori in perpetuo la signoria della Massetta con le ville di Pagno, Tivo e Casalecchio, signoria che venne poi esercitata dalla famiglia Pasetta con titolo comitale. Da quest'investitura ebbe origine la consuetudine d'aggiungere al nome di famiglia il suffisso "della Masetta" o "della Massa"; anzi col tempo tale consuetudine si generalizzò talmente che il predicato feudale finì per sostituire il cognome, e furono necessarie una sentenza del tribunale di Forlì in data 31 lug. 1909 e un'altra di quello di Brescia in data 20 ott. successivo per autorizzare l'uso del duplice cognome in luogo di quest'ultimo solo. Nel 1814, avvenuta la restaurazione del governo pontificio, il feudo della Massa e suoi annessi era in possesso dei conti Carlo Francesco, cav. di S. Stefano,
