É uma das famílias mais antigas de Faenza, registrada entre os nobres no Livro Dourado daquela cidade em 1558. Parece ter uma origem comum com os conhecidos em Bologa desde 1221 e que tinham homens muito ilustres, entre os que vale mencionar Guido, de Teodorico, criado bispo de Nocera por Inocêncio IV; Lucas, que foi núncio apostólico no Reino de Portugal por Sisto IV; Giacomo, bispo de Faenza em 1510; Giovanni, que em 1413 teve a honra de tomar o lugar de Galeazzo Manfredi no governo de Faenza. Do ramo que reside em Faenza, o primeiro dos quais há alguma menção é um certo Nicolo, pai de Andrea, que se casou com Onestina Cittadini, de quem Antonio, marido de Agnesina Barbarari.
