Famiglia antica nel patriziato della città di Sorrento, del Seggio di Dominova, che venne ricevuta nel Sovrano Ordine di Malta, per giustizia, dal 1603 come quarto della famiglia Sersale (Archivio Ordine Malta, Proc. 4795); e nel 1657 come quarto della famiglia Donnorso. (A. Archivio di Stato Napoli, vol. III, Priorato di Capua). Venne riconosciuta di nobiltà generosa, nel 1858, nelle prove di ammissione nelle RR. Guardie del Corpo di Ferdinando e Vincenzo (R. Archivio di Stato Napoli, R. Commissione dei Titoli, "Verbali", vol. XII, pag. 5). Venne pure ascritta al Registro delle Piazze Chiuse pei discendenti da Andrea, di Gaetano, patrizio di Sorrento. Altro ramo. Originaria della penisola sorrentina, molti individui di questa famiglia fin dal XII secolo ebbero il titolo di milite. Fu ascritta al patriziato di Lettere nel 1647 ed ebbe altresì il titolo di marchese di Sarno. Gaetano S. fece parte del governo di
