Il cognome primitivo di questa nobile famiglia bergamasca era De Preposulo. Esso è rimasto fino ad oggi nello stemma espresso da due sigle, ed anche nell'uso, specialmente in lingua latina, fino al secolo XVIII. Il cognome oggi usato, proviene probabilmente, da Ottopasso De Preposulo (1190), oppure da Pietro, detto Pazzo (1148). Un prezioso codice, donato alla Bibilioteca Civica di Bergamo dal compianto conte Cesare Camozzi Vertova e intitolato: Inventario delle insegne ovvero arme di Bergamo, contiene in fine una raccolta di registri e di documenti autenticati, formata allo scopo di dimostrare l'antichità e la nobiltà della famiglia, e la falsità della leggenda che poneva l'origine di essa in un mandriano disceso in Bergamo nel secolo XIV da una giogaia dei monti di Premolo chiamata Pas ossia Passo (valico), e perciò denominato Del Pas. In documenti dell'Archivio Capitolare, di quello Vescovile e di quello di Astino, son ricordati nell'anno 996 Pietro,
