Nobilissimo casato che, secondo la tradizione, vuolsi discenda dagli antichi signori di Embrun e che sia stata portata in Sicilia da un Roberto, ai tempi del conte Ruggero. Una altra tradizione vuole invece che essa discenda da una casa consolare romana, presente in Sicilia nel 233 dopo Cristo. Secondo una altra ricostruzione ancora, la famiglia sarebbe una diramazione della casa reale aragonese e che dunque sia stato suo capostipite l'infante Pietro d'Aragona, signore di Ayerbe, figlio di Giacomo il Conquistatore, re d'Aragona, e di donna Teresa di Vidaure, e che sia stata portata in Sicilia, verso la metà del secolo XIV, da un Giovanni, figlio di Michele, signore di Paternoy, figlio di Pietro predetto, il quale fu barone di Burgio, Murgo, etc. Infine, vi è chi sostiene che la famiglia Paternò sia stata portata in Sicilia da un Ximenes (o Simone) nel 1282.
