Una familia muy noble que, según la tradición, quería descender de los antiguos señores de Embrun y que fue traído a Sicilia por un Roberto, en el momento del conde Roger. Sin embargo, otra tradición quiere que provenga de una casa consular romana, presente en Sicilia en 233 después de Cristo. Según otra reconstrucción más, la familia sería una rama de la casa real aragonesa y, por lo tanto, el infante Pedro de Aragón, señor de Ayerbe, hijo de James el Conquistador, rey de Aragón, y de la mujer Teresa de Vidaure, y que fue traído a Sicilia, a mediados del siglo XIV, por un Giovanni, hijo de Michele, señor de Paternoy, hijo de Pietro predetto, que era barón de Burgio, Murgo, etc. Finalmente, hay quienes afirman que la familia Paternò fue traída a Sicilia por un Ximenes (o Simone) en 1282.
