La famiglia è nota nella terra di Populonia, principato di Piombino, fino dal XV secolo e si vuole colà trapiantata da Ferrara ove godé del rango di magistrato nobile, ottenendo l'ascrizione a quel patriziato. S. M. Vittorio Emanuele II con R. D. 23 ottobre 1871 nominava Azzolino, sindaco di piombino pel triennio 1871-1873, carica che gli fu confermata quasi ininterrottamente fino al 1882. Con D. Pref. del 6 giugno 1862 ottenne altresì la nomina a capitano della Guardia Nazionale di Piombino. Il Prefetto del Compartimento di Pisa gli conferiva anche la carica di priore pel nuovo magistrato della Comunità di piombino per gli anni 1859 e 60. Fu inoltre prescelto per le cariche di Commissario per le imposte dirette, di delegato governativo eppoi di presidente. Occupò quasi tutte le principali cariche comprese quelle di beneficenza e nelle quali si addimostrò meritevole delle affettuose dimostrazioni degli indigenti di quel principato in
