La famiglia era originaria di Bologna ove un Domenico fu degli Anziani nel 1351 e dopo di lui sostennero la stessa carica Pizzolo, Niccolò, Tommaseo, Matteo, Peppino ed altri. Nel 1387 furono del Consiglio dei 400 Nannino, figlio del nominato Pizzolo nonchè Pietro Paolo, Giovanni e Giacomo: nel 1401 Antonio fu castellano di Dozza e nel 1555 un Alberto fu colonnello in Ungheria. Nel XIV secolo Antonino di Bologna si trasferì in Macerata, ove fondò un ramo al quale appartenne Fortunato, che fu creato Vescovo di Sarsina dal Papa Nicolò V, nonchè un Giovanni che fu Senatore di Roma, prefetto dell'Annona. Governatore di Perugia, e presidente di Romagna nel 1587. La famiglia è iscritta genericamente nell'Elenco Ufficiale Nobiliare Italiano del 1922 coi titoli di Patrizio Maceratese (maschi e femmine), in persona dei Discendenti da Cesare (1513), Nobile di Treja (maschi e femmine), in persona dei Discendenti da Bartolomeo (1793).
