Antigua y muy ilustre familia de Calabria, originaria de Gioiosa Ionica, noble ya desde el siglo XV dC, que se extendió a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. Según genealogistas autorizados, el origen de esta cognominación debe buscarse en el término dialectal griego, típico del área de Bova (RC) "pelicanò", con el significado de "pájaro carpintero verde" (gr.
