Antigua familia tergestina, de probable origen veneciano, llamada Pelloso, Pilloso o Pelosio, que se ha extendido a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia. El origen de esta cognominación, según los genealogistas autorizados, debe buscarse en el cognomen "Pellosus", atribuido a un progenitor, hoy desconocido, probablemente en virtud de sus características físicas. En cualquier caso, los primeros vestigios que dejó esta familia ya se pueden encontrar en el siglo X, es decir, cuando vivió ese valiente aventurero Astolfo, que se puso a sueldo de Venecia. En 1365 estuvo presente en Candia y, en 1368, cuando comenzó la guerra con Trieste, lo encontramos como agente de la cancillería, en Treviso. De vuelta en Trieste, asumió la defensa del castillo de Moccò, fingió querer rendirse a Venecia e interceder ante los Triestines: lo que nunca hizo. A pesar de la rendición de Trieste, Astolfo mantuvo una guerra de guerrillas
