Antica ed illustre famiglia abruzzese, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, con il maggiore insediamento in Umbria. La casata è sorta dall'unione, probabilmente per via matrimoniale, di rami collaterali di due nobili famiglie siciliane, di cui ci apprestiamo a trattare. La casata Pilo o Pelosi vuolsi sia stata portata da Genova in Sicilia, sul calar del secolo decimo sesto, da un Bartolomeo, di Gio. Battista. La casata è però originaria di Spagna. Goffredo Pelos, quarto conte di Barcellona, ebbe due figli ed uno di questi, Roboaldo, solcando il mediterraneo con tre galere catalane, fu assalito dalla flotta genovese, battuto, e dietro un accanito combattimento fatto prigioniero e condotto in Genova; indi, riavuta la libertà, sposò una signora di casa Adorno. Da lui una serie d'illustri personaggi, tra cui il predetto Bartolomeo che, nel 1560, passò in Sicilia. La nobile famiglia Ventura fu
