Família castelhana, cujo solar é na abadia de S. João de la Penha, junto de Salamanca. Principiou este apelido em Tomás de la Peña, que pelos muitos e assinalados serviços que prestou a D. Fernando, o Católico, teve o foro de fidalgo e diversas mercês para si e seus descendentes. Esta família passou a Portugal na pessoa de Diogo Mendes de la Penha, que foi fidalgo da Casa do Infante D. Luís, por cujas instâncias D. João III lhe confirmou suas armas em Almeirim aos 27 de Maio de 1527, as quais eram as que D. Fernando, o Católico, concedera a seu avô, o referido Tomás de la Peña, a 22 de Junho de 1490. O apelido, que em Espanha é de la Peña, aportuguesou-se em de la Penha e em de L.. Deste apelido era também o chefe da linhagem de Deusdará, principiada em Simão Álvares de la Penha, a quem D. João IV deu armas novas correspondentes àquela apelido. Timbre: a águia do escudo, sainte, carregada de um besante de ouro, com uma cruz florida de vermelho.
