Antichissimo casato tedesco, illustre sin dai tempi di Ottone I, passato in Gubbio con un Presbiterio, padre del Conte Berno ed avo di Orso, ricordati in un istrumento del 1029. Nel sec. XIII emigrarono da Gubbio in seguito alla lotta delle fazioni e passarono a Perugia, dando origine all'illustre famiglia dei Baroni fondatori del castello della Penna, nel contado di Amelia. Ma, d'altronde, tal casato, in ogni epoca, sempre riuscì a distinguersi, grazie agli elevati personaggi, a cui diede i natali. Tra questi, senza nulla levar al valore degli omessi, ricordiamo: Alessio che fu creato cardinale di S. R. Chiesa, nel 1189, dal papa Clemente III; Francesco, il quale fu Senatore di Roma nel 1364; Agamennone, il quale fu Luogotenente Generale di Braccio da Montone; Giacomo, prode capitano, per vie matrimoniali, ereditò il marchesato di Castiglion del Lago.
