La stirpe dei Perbono o Perboni, già Petrobono (Petrus Bonus), secondo il Ghilini, proveniva da quella di Ponzone, la quale originava da uno dei sette figli del marchese Aleramo Duca di Sassonia, e di Adelasia, figlia dell'imperatore Ottone I, vissuto negli anni attorno al 974. L'imperatore diede ad ognuno dei suoi nipoti un Marchesato: tra di essi, il primo, Guglielmo, ebbe il Monferrato ed il sesto ebbe Ponzone: dalla famiglia dei marchesi di Ponzone deriverebbe appunto quella dei Perboni. Il Guasco cita un documento del 23 agosto 1151 nel quale è nominato un "Petrusbonus" proprietario di terre a Marengo. I Perboni furono infatti fra i maggiori proprietari di terre nella Frascheta. Dai Cartari dell'Abbazia di Rivalta Scrivia apprendiamo che nel circondario dei "Petrusbonus" possedevano terre e casa sia nel Novese che a Tortona.
