La famiglia di Sisto V, era detta anticamente dei Ricci da Montalto (Marche), e fino dal XV secolo occupava le prime cariche di quella terra, come si rileva dagli elenchi dei Priori. Nel catasto 1520 figura il nome di Perictus Jacobj de Riccis. Suo figlio, Prospero, è detto nel 1546 Prosper Pericti, ed in un rogito del 1550, è chiamato Prospero di Peretto, e così suo fratello Felice, che divenne papa Sisto V. Anche Camilla, moglie di Giovanni Battista Mignucci, è detta Camilla di Peretto. Il cognome Ricci venne così mutato in Peretti. L'antico stemma era d'azzurro al leone d'oro, attraversato da una banda di rosso; ma quando fra Felice divenne cardinale, e fu detto il cardinale di Montalto, aggiunse i monti e le stelle alla banda e le pere fra le zampe del leone.
