It is a topographic name for someone who lived near a pear tree, from the Middle English word 'oer(r)ie' (and the Old English word 'pyrige', a derivative of 'pere' meaning pear). It is also from the Welsh medieval name Herry, an assimilated form of Henry. The variant of the name 'Pery' is the family name of thr Earls of Limerick. The present title was first granted to Edmonf Pery (1758 - 1844). The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definately determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive's confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain 'Edward Perry', of Bideford, North Devon, England emigrated to America in 1639, He settled in Sandwich, Mass, and married 'Mary Freeman' in 1654, He died in 1695 having fatherd one son, 'Samuel Perry'. Today, 'Perry' is the '80th' most common surname in North America.
