La famiglia ebbe per capostipite Giovanni che giunse a tal grado di potenza e dignità da gareggiare con le famiglie primarie di Roma. Ebbe la signoria dei feudi di Monte Asola, di Cantalupo, di Forano, di Montorio, di Poggio Morano e di Diodato in Sabina comprati nel 1463 da Giorgio, protonotario apostolico, e degli altri di Collefegato, di Torre di Paglia di Rocca Randisi negli Abruzzi di cui fu investito un Giangiorgio nel 1530 dall'Imperatore Carlo V. La famiglia ebbe inoltre il ducato di Civitanova ed il marchesato di Civitalavinia. Emersero da questa famiglia quattro cardinali tra i quali il famoso Giuliano che levò gran rumore nel pseudo Concilio di Basilea. Diversi furoni i vescovi, altri podestà e governatori.
