E' un ramo degli Estensi di Ferrara il quale fu aggregato al Gran Consiglio di Venezia nel 1350. Altro ramo. Illustre ed antichissima casa d'Italia che ebbe il nome da Este, terra del padovano, ove fu il suo dominio che si distese su Padova, Ferrara, Modena e Reggio. I primi nomi registrati dalla storia sono quelli di Oberto I nel 972 e Oberto II che fu lo stipite di Casa d'Este. I più illustri Estensi furono: Azzo V marchese d'Este, che rapì Marchesella degli Adelardi, capi di parte guelfa, e la dette in moglie a Obizzo suo padre. Per questo ratto entrarono in casa d'Este le immense possessioni che ebbe nel Ferrarese, nella Romagna, nella Marca d'Ancona e si accesero quelle guerre fra gli Estensi e i Torelli, che per circa due secoli desolarono quella parte d'Italia.
