Antica ed assai nobile famiglia, conosciuta come Petiti o Petitti o Pettiti, che la tradizione vuole provenga dai signori di Verzuolo, originaria da Villafranca, da dove si diramò a Carmagnola, Montanaro, Chivasso, Saluzzo e Cherasco. Dal presente ramo, oriundo da Cherasco, le prime memorie sicure risalgono ad un Antonio, fiorente a metà del secolo XVI, e che fu padre di Stefano. Da costui provenne Lelio Antonio, capitano e gentiluomo di bocca del principe Tommaso di Savoia (1619). Filippo, figlio del precedente, ebbe il grado di capitano nello squadrone Piemonte e successivamente di tenente colonnello nelle milizie di Cherasco. Fu padre costui di Antonio (dec. Milano, 12 febbraio 1737) che ebbe le cariche di prefetto referendario di Vercelli (1714), di Pinerolo, di intendente generale del Monferrato (1724), della Savoia e dell'Alessandrino, e di consigliere e di generale delle Finanze (1733). Fu egli infeudato di Roretto il 26 novembre 1735 e investito
