Antica ed assai nobile famiglia toscana, originaria dell'Incisa, piccola terra del Valdarno superiore, le cui prime memorie risalgono ad un Ser Garzo notajo, vissuto nel XIII secolo. Migliore, di lui figlio, dopo essere stato canonico delal Chiesa di San Vito all'Incisa, lo si trova abitare in Firenze nel 1290, esercitando la professione di notaro. Ser Parenzo, altro figlio di Ser Garzo, nello stesso anno era fra i notari fiorentini del sesto di porta S. Piero di Firenze; Ser Petrarco, da cui prese il nome la famigla, nipote ex frate del precedente, fu giureconsulto, e fin dal 1302 godè la carica di cancelliere delle Riformagioni, e fu due volte ambasciatore della Repubblica fiorentina ai Pisani. Da lui nacquero: Gerardo, monaco certosino, ed il celebre Francesco Petrarca, uno dei quattro grandi poeti italiani.
