Antica ed illustre famiglia, originaria di Sassari, le cui notizie risalgono al secolo XVII. Tale cognominizzazione, anteriore all'XI secolo, dovrebbe derivare dal nome medioevale Pedrotus o Petretus. Nel 1639, tal antico casato, ottenne il cavalierato ereditario con un Giuseppe, che nel 1643 fu ammesso allo stamento militare, durante il parlamento Avellano. Dei suoi figli, il dottor Gavino, giudice della Reale Udienza, fu un giurista molto rinomato ed ottenne la nobiltà nel 1644; Ignazio sposò in De Sena, erede del feudo di Olmedo. Sua figlia Vittoria sposò in Amat e fece passare il feudo in quella famiglia. Elmo. D'acciaio, chiuso ornato di pennacchi di diversi colori. I cognomi così antichi rendono decoro non solo alle famiglie ma anche alle città che li hanno accolti; pare siano, infatti, molto riguardevoli i soggetti viventi di questa famiglia che, con tanto decoro, sostentano questo nobile cognome, che ha avuto vari soggetti illustri.
