Antica ed assai nobile famiglia di Siena, ove risulta presente sin dall'anno 1252, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia, con un maggiore insediamento in Campania. La casata ha dato numerosi uomini alla Chiesa, tra cui: Riccardo, creato nel 1313, anno della sua morte, cardinale di S.R. da Papa Bonifacio VIII; il Beato Paolo, monaco certosino nel 1362; Guglielmo, frate dei Servi di Maria, Arcivescovo di Bari; il Beato Cristofaro, che morì nel 1513. Ludovico, conte palatino, eccellente soldato ed esperto giurista, fu consigliere di Francesco Sforza duca di Milano, Senatore di Roma, Ambasciatore nel 1451 del re di Napoli Alfonso I d’Aragona presso la Repubblica Senese e Papa Pio II. La famiglia passò nel 1467 nel Priorato dell’Ordine Gerosolimitano in persona di Fra Petronio, Commendatore di San Leonardo, nel 1757 in persona del Commendatore Gaetano Petrone e nel 1797 in persona di Saverio Maria Petrone, cavaliere gerosolimitano,
