Antichissima e nobilissima famiglia feudale, che vuolsi di origine romana, salvatasi attraverso le invasioni barbariche. Ebbe, da tempi remotissimi, la signoria del castello di Pianciano o Planciano, che fu nell'anno 1520 fatto demolire con le sue rocche, dal delegato cardinale di Cortona, poiché seppe che i Pianciani vi avevano accolti i Baglioni, che in quel momento erano nemici del papa, e aperto loro sicuro passo alla fuga. Sino a pochi anni dietro mantennero il più che millenario possesso fondiario della loro signoria, che costituì, e costituisce ancora al presente, una delle più importanti frazioni montane del Comune di Spoleto.
