Família antiga, originária de Gênova, que, no início do século XVIII, residia em Acireale, onde, em 3 de abril de 1725, Don Placido Piccione, magistrado, obteve a investidura do Barão de Grassura e Molino d'Immezzo. A disputa de Pianogrillo chegou à família no século XIX, através de Margherita Guastella e Schiuoller, del Piano del Grillo, filha do Barão Gaetano Guastella e Schiuoller del Piano del Grillo, irmã de Serafino Amabile Guastella, o maior escritor vernáculo siciliano, casado com o notário Vito Veninata, de Ragusa, cuja irmã Agata se casou com o advogado do barão Don Lorenzo Saverio Piccione, magistrado de Bourbon, pretor no distrito de Avola. Margherita Guastella y Schiuoller e Don Vito Veninata adotaram os sobrinhos Nicolò e Cettina Piccione di Grassura após a morte de seus pais.
