Discendono da Ranieri, di Rustichino, che nel 1207 troviamo camerlengo del Comune di Siena, nel 1213 fu uno dei testimoni all'atto di pacificazione fra Siena e i conti dell'Ardenghesca. Da Rinaldo, di Ranieri, parte un ramo, che detto dei Piccolomini della Torre a Castello, dal nome di questo loro possedimento; Enea, di Rinaldo, ebbe altissime cariche nella Repubblica, fu ufficiale di parte guelfa, ambasciatore al papa nel 1271 e all'imperatore nel 1272. Ebbe altre ambascerie al papa e all'imperatore e partecipò alla conclusione della pace con i Salimbeni e con i ghibellini. I suoi discendenti ebbero anche'essi incarichi e uffici importantissimi, ma trattandosi di linea estinta, ricorderemo solo Enea Silvio, di Ranieri, che in gioventù scrisse commedie e poemi apprezzatissimi, ma poi si dette allo studio della teologia, divenendo canonico di Provenzano e addottorandosi in filosofia e teologia.
