Antica famiglia di Matelica che forse ebbe attinenza con l'omonima di Roma e Città di Castello. L'essersi bruciato nel sec. XVI l'Archivio storico della cattedrale di Matelica, ci impedisce di parlare degli antichi personaggi di questa famiglia. Pare che in Matelica la trapiantasse il famoso capitano di ventura Foscarello di Matelica, vissuto nel sec. XIV e che fu allievo del celebre capitano Boldrino da Panicale; e che dopo aver combattuto in parecchie imprese per la Chiesa, passò al servizio del re di Napoli, dove per le sue gesta ebbe il titolo di "conte di Potenza" trasmissibile ai suoi discendenti. Ebbe egli Antonio che fu generale dei Crociferi e Pierleone da cui è tradizione discendano gli attuali Pierleoni. Purtroppo però da costui a Gian Domenico, che nel 1614 sposò Camilla Bernardi, non è stato possibile stabilire il raccordo. Altri rami Pierleoni vi furono (oggi estinti), ma non si è potuto stabilire
