Originaria di Francia, fu trapiantata in Italia da un Adamo capitano di cavalleria che seguì Carlo d'Angiò alla conquista del regno di Napoli, e ne ottenne il castello di Macerata fra Napoli ed Aversa. Da uno de' suoi discendenti, che acquistò colle armi la terra di P. nella diocesi di Teano, derivò Giacomo che trasferitosi a Bologna prese e lasciò ai suoi discendenti il nome di P. che egli aveva lungo tempo governato, la di lui famiglia fu ascritta alla nobiltà bolognese nel 1400, e più tardi introdotta fra le sentorie nel 1651. E' fregiata del titolo marchionale. Fu costume delle più antiche famiglie, le quali dopo la caduta del Romano Imperio, in quella inondatione de' Barbari, havendo i loro cognomi, sicome gli studi, e altre cose belle smarrito e restati solo con semplici nomi, trarre di nuovo i loro cognomi, e il loro casato da' nomi proprii paterni, e
