Antica ed assai nobile famiglia, detta Pietramellara o Vassé Pietramellara, la quale vuolsi di origine franca e giunta in territorio nostrano, alla discesa di Carlo d'Angiò in Italia nel 1264, dal momento che, tra i condottieri del suo esercito, venne anche un Adamo Pietramellara, capitano di cavalleria, che nella conquista del regno di Napoli fu fatto signore del Castello di Macerata tra Napoli ed Aversa. Un Tommaso, matematico dai celebri natali, nel 1470, si recò in Bologna, in ragione dei suoi studi; proprio da costui discende la famiglia, senatoria bolognese, oggi detta per avere uno dei discendenti della medesima assunto il detto cognome in memoria che i suoi antenati avevano molto tempo governato quella terra nella diocesi di Teano.
