Família antiga e ilustre, originária dos Apeninos da Campânia, que se espalharam ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália. A origem dessa cognominação, em nome de genealogistas ilustres, deve ser procurada na fusão do nome próprio "Pietro" com a aférese da equipe "Lorenzo", que pertencia, com quase certeza absoluta, aos progenitores, hoje infelizmente desconhecidos. Provavelmente, esta casa foi decorada com o título de cavaleiro, após a participação, sob os estandartes aragoneses, caracterizados por coragem e virtude, de um Matteo Pietrorenzo na guerra de Otranto, de 1481, contra os otomanos.
