Nobile famiglia di Modena, originaria però da Forlì dove era chiamata de' Salaffi; diramatasi a Ravenna, vanta tuttora per proprio avito sepolcro quell'arca della fine del sec. XIV di ciclopica costruzione, che si ammira prersso la tomba di Dante e che porta infatti la laconica ma espressiva epigafre a grandi caratteri romani: PIGNATORVM. Per tradizione sembra della stessa famiglia il cavaliere Gaspare Pignata famigliare del Tasso da lui ospitato a Ravenna. Trapiantatasi a Ferrara e quindi a Modena, seguendo la fortuna degli Estensi lor Signori, qui si stabilirono e ancora prosperarono in floridissimi rami dal sec. XVI. Questa famiglia diede poi allo Stato Modenese varie persone cospicue specie nelle cariche amminstrative e il titolo comitale venne infatti loro concesso il 31 dic. 1845, nella persona di Gemianino Pignatti per la sua qualità di ministro di Pubblica Economia ed Istruzione dal duca Francesco IV di Modena.
