No se ponen de acuerdo los genealogistas respecto al origen de este noble apellido. Algunos autores aseguran que los apellido Piña y Pina son uno mismo pero que a través del tiempo varió este vocablo. El capitán Fernando de Pina asistió a la conquista de Mallorca con don Jaime I, siendo uno de los primeros en entrar en la ciudad. Algunos de sus descendientes se dice que variaron el vocablo de Pina en Piña. Otros escriben que el apellido Piña es el mismo que P., asignándoles las mismas armas que a éste. Pero lo más probable es que este linaje proceda del de Piedra, de la villad e Limpias, en la provincia de Santander, siendo considerado Juan Sánchez de Piña como uno de los primeros ascendientes de este noble apellido. Una de sus ramas pasó a la villa de Castrojeriz, en la provincia de Burgos, y de ella dimanó otra que fundó nueva casa solar en Murcia. De la casa de Murcia, pasaron los Piña a las islas Baleares, dejando descendencia.
