Antica ed assai nobile famiglia genovese, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del mondo. Conosciuta originariamente come Pinelli, essa è stata talvolta trascritta nella forma Pincelli, come leggesi anche in un passaggio del "Dizionario Storico-Blasonico" del Crollalanza. La forma Pincelli è stata poi nel tempo assunta come unica da alcuni rami familiari. In ogni modo, essa si annovera tra le patrizie genovesi da tempo immemore. Ha anche avuto l'onore di dare due Dogi alla Repubblica di Genova: Agostino, nel 1596 e un altro Agostino, nel 1609. Celebre poi il cardinale di S.R.C. Domenico, così creato da Papa Sisto V nel 1585. Si ricordi anche Bernardo, Arcivescovo di Avignone nel 1645. L'importanza di questa casata è testimoniata anche dall'aver dato il nome ad uno degli Alberghi genovesi, istituzione tipica della Liguria che consisteva in un consorzio di famiglie nobili, legate da vincoli
