Apellido de origen gallego. Procede de las cercanías de Betanzos en La Coruña. Una rama pasó a Asturias estableciéndose en Abres y San Tirso de Abres. También en Canarias se estableció este apellido desde mediados del siglo XVI. Sebastián P. y Santiago Mario P., se afincaron en la villa de Puntallana, desde donde se extendió este apellido por toda la isla, especialmente en Santa Cruz de la Palma; enlazó con ilustres familias palmeras, como Lugo, Van de Walle, Fleitas, Molina, Crespo, etc. Sus miembros desempeñaron importantes cargos tanto eclesiásticos como civiles en todas las épocas. En el transcurrir del tiempo modificóse la grafía de este apellido, suprimiéndose la seguna "i" para quedar en la forma española de hoy, que también se usa ne La Palma. Caballeros de este apellido probaron su nobleza en las Ordenes de Santiago, Calatrava, Carlos III y San Juan de Jerusalén, así como en la Real Chancillería de Valladolid. Don Antonio P. y Aguillar fue creado Conde de Canillas en 3 de abril de 1878.
