I Piola antichi patrizi milanesi, aggiunsero al loro cognome quello della famiglia Daverio nel 1748, per effetto del testamento del march. Gio. Battista Daverio, zio materno di un Ottavio, al quale il Daverio lasciò tutti i suoi beni, sotto condizione che assumesse il cogome e le insegne della sua famiglia. Ottavio, infatti, ottenne, con decreto 3 agosto 1770 del Tribunale Araldico di Lombardia, che il suo stemma gentilizio fosse registrato nel Codice Araldico, con l'inquarto dello stemma Daverio. Secondo le tradizioni famigliari, i membri di tale famiglia, anticamente Piora, sarebbero venuti dalla Francia in Milano al principio del XII secolo; ma poichè nel 1199 un Guido de Piora figura tra i consiglieri della città di Alessandria e come ambasciatore della stessa città compare nel trattato di pace stipulato a Milano il 13 giugno dello stesso anno 1199 tra i comuni di Milano, Piacenza, Vercelli, Alessandria ed Asti, da una parte,
