Antica ed assai nobile famiglia siciliana, con dimora Castelbuono, Gangi, Cefalù e Palermo, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Secondo quanto ci viene tramandato tal famiglia, di origine portoghese, fu portata in Sicilia da un Domenico nel 1580, i cui figli, Angelo e Pietro, diedero origine ai diversi rami del casato presenti in quel Regno. Il principale ebbe residenza in Cefalù, ove sul calar del secolo decimo settimo un Mario, del fu Francesco di Castelbuono, acquistò il feudo di Castagna (27 novembre 1660) ed il feudo di Mandralisca, di cui ebbe investitura, con titolo baronale, in data 21 novembre 1666. Tra i personaggi che maggiormente hanno dato lustro al casato, ricordiamo: Giovan Battista, barone di Mandralisca, il quale fu giurato di Cefalù nel 1705-1706; Michelangelo, barone di Mandralisca con investitura del 4 agosto 1709, che fu capitano di giustizia in detta città nel 1757-58; Enrico, barone di
