Antica ed illustre famiglia, di origine greca, la quale si trova stabilita nell'isola di Rodi fin dal XIV secolo, ove possedeva molti latifondi e sosteneva le più cospicue cariche. Caduta quell'isola in potere dei Turchi, la famiglia volle seguire la fortuna dell'ordine Gerosolimitano che era stato costretto di abbandonarla, e si stabilì successivamente in Candia, in Messina, in Viterbo, ma quando l'ordine passò a Malta nel 1530, Cosimo, trapiantò quivi la propria famiglia, ed era nominato al supremo comando degli arsenali e cantieri dell'ordine, carica che passò poi al di lui figlio Paolo. Da questo nacque Lorenzo-Ubaldesco, esimio giureconsulto, e uditore di parecchi Gran Maestri. Giovanni Pio, figlio del, precedente, dal Gran Maestro Perettos fu creato barone di Budac il 23 aprile 1716, e dal Re Carlo VI nominato segreto regio a Siracusa nel 1726, e da Filippo V di Spagna decorato nel 1742 del titolo di visconte di Cartlez,
