Due cugini Brau ed Opizio, di nazione svizzeri, al tempo del Magno Ottone, scesi con lui in Italia, stabilirono in Bologna la propria faamiglia e fecero acquisto di case e di terre, ed in un luogo della montagna bolognese fabbricarono un castello cui diedero il loro cognome, ricevendone nel 966 regolare investitura, sotto il titolo di cattani di Vizano dal suddetto Imperatore. Questa famiglia fu una delle più potenti del partito guelfo, e più volte impugnò le armi contro i conti di Panico di parte ghibellina, che per lo che ebbe a partire gravi danni nelle sostanze; onde volendo il Senato Bolognese ricompensare i meriti ed i sacrifici fatti dai Vizani a prò della patria nel 1306, li fece liberi da ogni gravezza di gabelle, ed ordinò che fossero cancellate tutte le memorie di qualunque bando che per l'addietro fosse stato pubblicato contro di loro.
