La famiglia trae origini dalla Toscana e si trasferì nel 1790 a Paliano ove Gregorio fu gonfaloniere. Da lui nacque Giuseppe Andrea nel 1702 e fu vescovo assistente al soglio nel 1854 e cardinale creato da Pio IX nel 1863. Sono imparentati con la famiglia Pecci di Carpineto. Con breve 29 novembre 1920 Benedetto XV creò conte con successione per mpr. Mario di Michele. Con Regio Decreto 4 novembre 1926 e RR. LL. PP. 6 febbraio 1927 l'attuale capo della famiglia Mario è stato autorizzato ad usare del titolo pontificio del conte. La famiglia è oggi rappresentata oltre che dal ricordato Mario, dai suoi figli Giuseppe, Matilde, Giulia, Renzo e Luigi. Altro ramo. Antica famiglia delle Marche con residenza nella località di Sant'Angelo in Vado. Ricordiamo di suddetta famiglia un Nicolò vescovo fi Forlì dal 1769 al 1776.
