Antigua y muy noble familia de Cremona, presente allí desde el siglo X V, originalmente conocida como Pizza, se extendió a lo largo de los siglos en varias regiones de Italia y del mundo. A finales del siglo XV, una rama del mismo pasó a residir en la zona napolitana y es de suponer que precisamente en este territorio, por razones de fonética dialectal, se cambió el apellido por el de Pizzarullo. Además, según genealogistas autorizados, la familia fue condecorada con el título de caballero, tras la participación, bajo los estandartes aragoneses, caracterizados por el coraje y la virtud, de un Carlos en la guerra de Otranto de 1481, contra los otomanos. Por otro lado, la casa siempre ha sabido destacarse gracias a las altas personalidades que vio nacer.
