Família apúlia antiga e muito nobre, originária de Salignano, cujas primeiras lembranças remontam ao século XVI, que se espalharam ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália e, principalmente, na Sicília. Além disso, um ramo da família mudou-se para Ruffano no final do décimo nono século e, após a morte do príncipe Leuzzi, que deixou sua herança para o primogênito de Luigi Pizzolante, mudou-se para o castelo de Ruffano. Giuseppe, o filho mais velho do mencionado, assumiu, portanto, o sobrenome duplo Pizzolante Leuzzi. Mas, por outro lado, essa família, no desenrolar de seu brilho, sempre conseguiu produzir uma série de homens que tornaram seu nome famoso, no emprego público e no serviço militar.
