I Placido sono originari di Radi nel contado senese; fino dal principio del Duecento si trovano ricordati come signori di quella località, e nel 1251 Cione era gonfaloniere dei cavalieri senesi nella spedizione contro i guelfi di Firenze. Un altro Cione, di Aldello, fu nel 1308 mandato dalla repubblica di Siena a metter pace fra i grossetani e gli uomini di Monteano. Bartolomeo ricevette, nel 1310, la definitiva sottomissione di Grosseto al comune di Siena e Domenico, di Neri, fu aggiunto ai deputati eletti dal senato per riformare il governo di Montepulciano nel 1347, mentre nel 1380 era commissario della Repubblica, che lo mandò come ambasciatore a Carlo di Durazzo. Nel 1394 un altro membro della famiglia, fu mandato a comporre le discordie fra il conte Bartoldo di Soana e il conte di S. Fiora. Il beato Lorenzo fu compagno del beato Giovanni Colombini.
