Famiglia oriunda della Vecchia Castiglia in Ispagna, originariamente chiamata Platis. Si portò in Italia in anno imprecisato, molto probabilmente nel secolo XVI con l'invasione spagnuola, perchè ai primi del 1600 troviamo questa famiglia a Reggio Emilia, indi a Mantova ove nei 1649 un Giovanni Battista viene aggregato a quella cittadinanza, poichè colà viveva da oltre dieci anni "sumptibus propriis". L'antico cognome fu allora italianizzato in Plati e Platti e rimase in questa forma sino ai primi del 1800, epoca in cui fu adottata l'odierna ortografia. A Mantova godettero di molta considerazione, vivendo "more nobilium" e contraendo cospicui matrimoni ad esempio con le nobili famiglie lombarde e venete quali i Perego, Baglioni, Bissaro, Foresti, Manfrin, Mainardi, ecc. Con diploma 10 marzo 1713 ad un Giovanni Antonio fu concesso dal Conte G.B. Castelbarco, capo della arciducale amministrazione del ducato di Mantova "il diritto di essere partecipe dei privilegi che godono le persone
