L'origine della famiglia Ginnasi si perde nella oscurità dei tempi. Sia che, come molti opinano, essa derivi da un ramo di quei Ginnasi che da Messina si trapiantarono in Cremona, sia che abbia avuto sviluppo dal ceppo di qualche casato originario romagnolo, certo è che dalla prima metà del sec. XVI essa fu sempre considerata tra le più pregiate e nobili degli Stati Pontifici. Dalla piccola terra di Castel Bolognese, si diramò ben presto a Faenza, a Imola, a Bologna, a Roma ed altrove, ed i suoi membri si congiunsero in matrimonio con illustri prosapie, di cui restò traccia anche nell'aggiunta dei cognomi materni: Ginnasi Poggiolini, Ginnasi Mazzolani, Ginnasi Paolucci e così via. Negli antichi documenti il cognome figura indifferentemente con le forme Zanassi, Zanasii, Zignasii, che poi si fissò stabilmente in Gymnasii, Ginnasi; e come tale figura in numerosi monumenti pubblici, in atti solenni di pontefici, governi
