Antica famiglia veronese, che fu detta primitivamente Vargatari e che figura nel campione dell'estimo dal 1584. Nel 1598 fu aggregata al Consiglio nobile della città, ma risulta vi abbia appartenuto col nome Vargatari o de Vargattari dal 1414. L'imperatore Napoleone, nella sua qualità di re d'Italia, concesse a questa famiglia il titolo di conte nella persona di Pietro, il quale, con S.R.A. 9 dicembre 1819, ottenne la conferma personale di questo titolo dichiarato nel 1837, trasmissibile per primogenitura con l'equiparazione al rango di conte dell'Impero Austriaco. Lo stemma della famiglia Polfranceschi è: Inquartato: nel primo di rosso alla spada di oro rivoltata in palo; nel secondo d'azzurro al cane bracco rivoltato posto sopra un ristretto di terreno, fissante un occhio umano posto sul canton sinistro, il tutto al naturale; nel terzo d'argento a tre tortelli di nero posti 2 e 1; nel quarto di verde alla banda d'argento.
