Cette famille remonte à la création des vicomtes du Velay contemporaine de celle des comtes par Charlemagne en 778. Confinés d'abord dans la vie féodale, à partir du XIVème siècle ils prennent part aux grands événements de l'histoire et occupent de hautes fonctions honorifiques. La généalogie commence par Armand I, vicomte de P., vivant en 860. Les premiers degrés fournissent déjà des personnages remarquables: Etienne, évêque de Clermont, en 1053; Héracle, qui portait l'étendard des Croisés et fut tué devant Antioche en 1098; Guillaume, prévôt de Brioude en 1161; Armand, évêque du Puy, en 1231. Armand VI, vicomte de Polignac , épousa, en 1251, Béatrix de Mercœur. Il fut père de: Armand VI, vicomte de Polignac, marié en 1277 à Marquèze de Randon, fille de Guillaume, seigneur de Luc, et de Walbourgeoise ou Walpurge de Rodez, qui apporta la baronnie de Randon aux Polignac.
