Questa famiglia risale alla creazione dei Visconti di Velay, contemporaneamente a quella dei Conti di Carlo Magno nel 778. Prima confinati alla vita feudale, dal XIV secolo presero parte ai grandi eventi della storia e ricoprirono alte cariche onorarie. . La genealogia inizia con Armand I, visconte di P., residente nell'860. I primi gradi forniscono già personaggi notevoli: Etienne, vescovo di Clermont, nel 1053; Heracle, che trasportava lo stendardo dei Crociati e fu ucciso prima di Antiochia nel 1098; Guillaume, preposto di Brioude nel 1161; Armand, vescovo di Puy, nel 1231. Armand VI, visconte di Polignac, sposato, nel 1251, Béatrix de Mercœur. Era il padre di: Armand VI, visconte di Polignac, sposato nel 1277 con Marquèze de Randon, figlia di Guillaume, signore di Luc, e di Walbourgeoise o Walpurge de Rodez, che portò la baronia di Randon ai Polignacs.
