Questa famiglia risale alla creazione dei Visconti di Velay, contemporaneamente a quella dei Conti di Carlo Magno nel 778. Prima confinati alla vita feudale, dal XIV secolo presero parte ai grandi eventi della storia e ricoprirono alte cariche onorarie. .
