Originata dalla famiglia Molignano, patrizia di Sorrento, riconosciuta nobile, nel 1507, dal Re Cattolico, con la formola dei quattro avi paterni e materni (R. Archivio di Stato Napoli, Privilegiorum, vol IX, 1507-1508), in persona di Francesco figlio di Mariano Molignano, milite al tempo degli Aragonesi, contraddistinto col soprannome di Sorrentino. Francesco ebbe in moglie la nobile Troiana Comes, signora di Corcumello e Poggio Filippo in Abruzzo, e di Pomigliano di Atella in Terra di Lavoro, ultima di sua famiglia ed ereditaria di detti feudi. Ammessa, per la sua nobiltà generosa nel 1835, nelle Regie Guardie del Corpo (Verbali della Regia Commissione dei Titoli, vol.
