Familia muy antigua y muy noble, llamada Polizzi, Polizi o Polizio, que llegó a Italia siguiendo a los reyes aragoneses, que desempeñaron diferentes roles político-militares durante la dominación aragonesa de Sicilia. Según el genealogista del siglo XVII Philadelphus Mugnos, el progenitor de la familia habría sido Simone / Ximenio, quien "para los servicios militares del rey Federico III recibió el feudo de Burraiti en Girgenti" (Agrigento).
